A video circulating online has reignited debate over Garda stop-and-search tactics after footage appeared to show two Gardaí physically confronting and threatening a young Irish teenager during an incident in Dublin.

According to accounts shared alongside the footage, what began as a routine stop-and-search escalated into a violence, with the teenager struck and intimidated by officers in public view. The circumstances surrounding the encounter remain unclear, and no official Garda statement had been issued at the time of writing.

Concerns over Garda conduct toward youth are not new. In February 2026, a Garda officer was jailed after being convicted of assaulting a handcuffed teenager during an arrest in Temple Bar. The court heard the teenager, described during proceedings as “skinny,” had been spear-tackled to the ground while restrained.

Previous reporting by The Irish Times documented longstanding complaints from Dublin teenagers who described being repeatedly stopped, searched, and treated “as though they are adult criminals,” particularly in inner-city areas. Youth workers and solicitors interviewed for the investigation warned that excessive stop-and-search practices were damaging trust between Gardaí and communities.

In another high-profile case, two Gardaí appeared before Dublin District Court charged with false imprisonment and assault after a young man allegedly suffered abuse inside a Garda station. The youth reportedly claimed he had been punched, restrained, and held by the throat.

Most recently, Gardaí violence was also seen during the fuel protests movement, which sparked backlash and concerns over the increasing violence of the State, similarly to the intensified policing and violence by Gardaí at pro-Palestine protests.

Private security practices in Dublin have also come under increasing scrutiny. In recent days, protests erupted after the death of Yves Sakila, a Congolese man who died after being physically restrained by private security personnel on Henry Street.

In the aftermath of these incidents, groups from across the political spectrum are expressing increasing disenfranchisement and concern at the tactics of both Gardaí and private security.
