Activists Slam Poster Censorship By DCC While Revolutionary Bloc Says No Permission Needed

The Irish Neutrality League, Irish Anti-War Movement and Tonn na Clé are calling on the public to join a “No Welcome for Trump” protest in Dublin on Saturday, 12 September, beginning at 1pm at the Garden of Remembrance.
The organisers say their second application to Dublin City Council to display posters advertising the protest has been rejected, despite significant changes being made to the original design.
According to the organisers, the first poster explicitly listed their reasons for opposing Donald Trump’s visit. Following concerns raised by Dublin City Council, they removed those references and submitted a simplified “Not Welcome” poster. That application was also rejected.
The organisers say they believe this raises serious questions about freedom of expression and the right of people to publicly advertise a peaceful protest and that ROSA Socialist Feminism has experienced similar difficulties with its protest poster.
The soft-left contingent of the movement has faced criticism from the ‘Revolutionary Bloc’ members, who are socialist republican and anti-imperialists activists, from various groups.
“While some on the Irish Left are seemingly petrified at the thought of putting their Anti-Trump posters up without the permission of Dublin City Council, we aren’t!, “ stated Éirígí in a statement, adding that “Irish apologists for imperialism should be challenged and exposed at every opportunity - be this in relation to the proposed entry of the Twenty-Six Counties into NATO, the British occupation of six Irish counties, membership of the EU rapid reaction forces, or the use of Shannon Airport by the US military”.
“On Saturday Sept 12 a march is being called against Trump’s presence in Dublin. But a march that consists of speeches by reformist politicians is not enough to demonstrate Ireland’s anger at Trump's crimes, “ said the Anti-Imperialist Action Ireland group in a statement, adding that “Anti Imperialist Action Ireland is calling a Revolutionary Bloc on the day, one that is ready to oppose Trump in words and action. We are calling on all Republicans, Socialists, Anti Imperialists and other progressives to join the Revolutionary Bloc and take the fight against imperialism in Ireland in as direct a manner we can!”.
