Socialist republicans from Anti-Imperialist Action Ireland (AIA) have defaced the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA) which is due to host NATO Deputy General Secretary Radmila Shekerinska on Monday.
“The IIEA (Institute of International and European Affairs), is a pro-EU thinktank that heavily promotes NATO and militarisation, “ the AIA said in a statement on social media, also noting that their “republican activists tagged the door and porch of the building with various anti-imperialist slogans reading “NO TO NATO” and “NATO OUT OF IRELAND” alongside an AIA logo with red paint. The branches participating in this action were the AIA Robert Emmet Coiste and the Charlie Donnelly Coiste. AIA has various branches operating in different locations around Ireland.
“NATO, a key part of the British Occupation of the Occupied 6 Counties, has shown increasing presence across Ireland recently and it is imperative that further action be taken to show that the terrorist organisation is not welcome and that the Irish people are not content with its imperialist, warmongering agenda by taking a firm anti-imperialist stance with actions such as this one, “ they concluded.
The news comes as the scheduled visit of Kaja Kallas to Wicklow is taking place on Tuesday. This follows her June meeting with Minister Thomas Byrne and occurs during Ireland's EU Presidency, a period when the contradictions between EU imperialism and national sovereignty, particularly for so-called "neutral" states like Ireland, are sharpening.
