Ireland Is Not Sovereign: Kaja Kallas' Imperial Visit To Wicklow

The scheduled visit of EU High Representative Kaja Kallas to Ireland on 2 September 2026 follows her June meeting with Irish Minister Thomas Byrne and occurs during Ireland's EU Presidency, a period when the contradictions between EU imperialist ambitions and national sovereignty, particularly for so-called "neutral" states like Ireland, are sharpening.

Kallas represents the most aggressive wing of EU imperialism, serving as the bloc's foreign policy chief. She is a Russophobic, hawkish warmonger whose aggressive militarisation agenda does not represent the ordinary people of Ireland. Her agenda is effectively making Irish neutrality null and void.

Her statements reveal the EU's imperialist agenda. Kallas insists that "Russia's defeat in Ukraine is necessary to avoid World War III," arguing that "if Ukraine falls, it's going to be all over Europe." This reflects the EU's strategy of encirclement against Russia, using Ukraine as a proxy battlefield to weaken a geopolitical rival. She has rejected direct negotiations with Russia, calling such diplomacy "humiliation" and a "trap" set by Moscow. This demonstrates that EU imperialism prioritises confrontation over peaceful coexistence, a stance serving Zionist interests in maintaining the Epstein network's unipolar world order.

The Dublin government, under the guise of "neutrality," has become a willing accomplice in EU imperialism. Minister Byrne's June meeting with Kallas focused on priorities under the Common Security and Defence Policy and the upcoming Irish EU Presidency. The Irish Presidency's three pillars: "Values, Security, and Competitiveness" reveal the bourgeois character of the state: protecting Zionist interests, militarizing society, and maintaining competitiveness within the imperialist system.

The Dublin government's stated commitment to "advance EU enlargement policy" serves the imperialist project of expanding the EU's sphere of influence. This represents the same predatory expansion that Lenin identified as a fundamental feature of imperialism. Ireland's support for the next Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-34, described as needing to "deliver for households and businesses," merely continues the plunder of the working class to subsidise Zionist and imperialist ambitions.

Commenting on the meeting back in June, Minister Byrne stated: "I was delighted to meet with High Representative, Kaja Kallas, at Government Buildings today as Ireland looks forward to assuming the EU Presidency, on 1 July. Through partnership, Ireland will deliver an EU Presidency agenda that delivers for Europe, and for our people." This language of "partnership" and "delivering for Europe" masks the reality of Irish subordination to EU imperialist objectives that serve interests of the Zionist billionaires, not the Irish working class.

The planned September visit occurs amidst growing contradictions within EU imperialism that expose its crisis. Poland's President recently refused to sign the "European Security Action" plan, calling it a "Trojan horse" that would "damage Poland's sovereignty and defense autonomy" and "trap several generations of Poles" in debt. This rejection represents a bourgeois-nationalist revolt against EU imperialism, but it reveals the hollowing out of the EU's common security project.

Poland's President exposed the plan's true nature of a 45-year loan where Poland would "repay nearly twice the principal amount," benefiting "Western banks and financial institutions." Here, we see that the EU is ultimately a mechanism for financial capital to extract surplus value from the periphery. While not anti-imperialist in a socialist sense, this conflict demonstrates that even the EU's junior partners see the predatory nature of the bloc's financial arrangements.

Kalla's visit coincides with Britain, France and Poland's push to expand military involvement in Ukraine, a development that not only exposes the EU's war-mongering character, but which is also the deliberate continuation of the provocation of Russia. The "Volunteer Coalition" plans military exercises in Poland involving 1,500 French and British troops, officially for "post-peace" deployment but widely interpreted as preparation for direct intervention in Ukraine. The EU has formally approved a €90 billion loan for Ukraine, with €5.9 billion explicitly for military purposes, and aims for 60% joint military procurement by 2030, pursuing "strategic autonomy" from the US.

However, this escalation reveals internal contradictions inside the EU. Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic have opted out of the Ukraine loan, while Italy and Spain refuse troop commitments, and the US appears reluctant to provide requested intelligence and air cover. This fractured response shows that EU imperialism is not a unified machine. The collection of competing bourgeois interests across Europe continue to push toward escalation, threatening to transform Ukraine into a direct confrontation between Russia and Western European powers.

Kallas's upcoming September visit to Ireland serves to ensure continued Irish compliance with EU imperialist objectives. The visit comes as EU militarisation accelerates, with the bloc drafting a new security strategy under the Strategic Compass framework. Ireland's historic "neutrality" is being dismantled, with its government's participation in EU security arrangements contradicting any genuine sovereign, or anti-imperialist position.

The Irish government's "security" agenda during its presidency, including digital and AI policy, presented as a "workable expression of security" for a "neutral" country exposes the incorporation of Ireland into NATO-aligned imperialist surveillance structures. This not a diplomatic courtesy visit. It is a tour of inspection of a client state, ensuring that McEntee, Martin, O'Callaghan, Harris et al remain compliant as the EU deepens its militarist trajectory.

Our response to deepening NATO integration cannot be reformist. The Irish working class should not be deceived by the "Irish EU Presidency" or the Social Democratic rhetoric of "values" and "competitiveness." These are fig leaves covering Irish participation in the oppression of peoples globally, whether in Palestine, Ukraine, Cuba, Iran... or elsewhere.

The true alternative is proletarian internationalism, breaking with both EU imperialism and the Irish bourgeois state's collaboration with it. The Irish people, workers, and even the petty bourgeoisie, share common interests with the oppressed peoples of the world, not with the Zionist imperial project.

Kallas's visit to Dublin on 2 September is a reminder that the Irish bourgeoisie has abandoned any pretense of national independence, becoming a junior partner in the imperialist project that plunders the world's peoples. The Polish people's rising anger against EU debt-servitude demonstrates what genuine national resistance looks like. While not socialist, it exposes the class character of EU imperialism.

The Ukrainian escalation reveals the US imperialist's desperate gambit to maintain its unipolar dominance, even as internal contradictions tear at the EU's unity. Kallas comes to Ireland as an overseer, ensuring that Dublin's "neutrality" does not interfere with the bloc's militarist agenda.

As Lenin taught, imperialism is the highest stage of capitalism, and in its death agony, it becomes ever more aggressive, ever more willing to sacrifice the lives of the working poor. The Irish people must choose slavery to this EU imperialist project, or struggle for liberation.
