Ukrainian Army Policy Of Busification Condemned In Dáil For The First Time

Yesterday, in the Dáil, busification was condemned for the first time by a sitting Irish TD during a debate intended to debrief the public about the latest European Council meeting.

The issue of civil liberties in Ukraine was raised by Paul Murphy TD of People Before Profit, who slammed Zelensky for abuses of power, and called on FFG to raise the issue during Ireland’s Presidency of the European Union.

“We cannot close our eyes to the abuses of human rights that are taking place in Ukraine. The Government should not continue to close its eyes. When President Zelenskyy is here in Dublin in a couple of weeks' time, the Minister of State needs to ask him about the policies of internment and forcible conscription into the Ukrainian army that have been rolled out across Ukraine. People are being taken off the streets in unmarked vans to enlistment centres if they cannot produce the right exemption documents in a policy known as busification”, he said.

“Those conscripted have been reported to be injured by the officers enforcing this practice. One man, Andrii Dombrovskyi, who is 26 years old, reported having his leg broken during detainment. This is conscription for the working class, for ordinary people; it is not for the rich because the rich can bribe their way out of conscription. We cannot ignore this. The Minister of State needs to call out the abuses of human rights”, he emphasized.

“The other thing, though, is that the Irish Government needs to not be complicit in these abuses of human rights because right now Ukrainians are suffering under the new temporary protection rules, which require proof of military exemption in order to be able to get temporary protection in the European Union. Ukrainians who do not have it are forced back into a war that they do not support and that they do not want to fight in. The Irish Government is currently complicit by sending back people who have come here seeking refuge, saying they do not want to fight. If they do not have the military exemption documents, they are sent back by the Irish Government to fight“, he added.

“It flies in the face of the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, which says that refugees cannot be returned to a country in which they are likely to face a threat to their life. Hungary has opted out of these new rules. The Irish Government should as well. We should also be counting the years Ukrainians have been here under temporary protection towards naturalisation. There is no reason for these people to be denied citizenship while under this protection“, he concluded.

Later on, FFG and opposition politicians exchanged verbal blows.

“Today his colleague wanted us to investigate Ukraine. That is what we were asked to do on the floor of this Chamber today, to investigate Ukraine”, said Thomas Byrne TD, Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach and the Department of Foreign Affairs.

“We are asking not to send Ukrainians back to fight in a war they do not want to fight in, “ said Richard Boyd Barrett TD of People Before Profit.

“No, the Deputy's colleague wanted an investigation and for us to tackle Zelenskyy about the allegations that were made here on the floor of the Dáil, “ Bryne retorted, also adding later on that the “far-right and far-left” are the “same on Russia”.

At the same debate, Peadar Tóibín TD of Aontú radically challenged the EU’s maximalist position on the Ukrainian war.

“The truth is that peace will come through a negotiated peace at some stage. The Government is now the President of the Council of the European Union. Has it made any efforts to create a negotiated peace between Russia and Ukraine? Has it spoken to the Russian ambassador? Has it reached out to Putin's Government?”, he said.

“I would say "No". I do not think this Government has done that. I do not think it has lifted the phone to anybody on that”, he continued.

“The EU does want peace, but it wants peace on its own terms in relation to this. It does not want a peace to happen immediately. It wants to make sure Russia is well defeated in terms of this war. My worry is that this particular policy of the European Union is actually prolonging the war in Russia and Ukraine”, he concluded.

Byrne's remarks demonstrate the heads-in-the-sand approach of FFG to the truths about EU-backed busification and the Irish state's complicity in denying refuge rights to the Ukrainian working class.
