Industrial School Survivors: Meeting In Limerick To Sign Up for Entitlements

A meeting is to take place on the 3rd of September at 11am at No 1 Perry Square, Georgian Quarter, Limerick City. It is being hosted by former hunger striker Mary Donovan and Sage Advocacy. 

All survivors in Limerick, Clare and Tipperary are invited to attend and there will be refreshments. 

The purposes of the meeting is the ongoing campaign to fight for supports for industrial and reformatory school survivors as well as helping survivors to sign up and access supports that have been granted. 

Survivors attending are asked to bring photocopies of documentation to sign up to a €600 per year wellbeing support grant. Survivors are asked to bring: 

• A photocopy of their travel pass, passport or drivers license
• A photo of the top part of their bank statement displaying account name, institution and IBAN. 

This is to receive assistance on the day in applying for the wellbeing grant as well as other supports and services. 

This is for survivors in the aforementioned counties only. There will be other meetings in other regions in the future. 

In Autumn of last year a group of survivors began a 45 day hunger strike outside the Dail for supports, which I wrote about on day 40 here, in pursuit of the state contributory pension, access to the health amendment act medical card and housing supports, which they were already entitled to. It has been a long battle for these brave and resilient people even since the end of the hunger strike to get the supports that are now available, and there is a longer road to go. 

This is a meeting for Industrial and Reformatory School survivors only in the Limerick, Clare and Tipperary area only. This is not a political meeting or a protest and people are asked to respect that, but to spread the word far and wide especially to older friends and relatives who may be survivors or know survivors so as many survivors as possible can be assisted in obtaining long awaited support, however thin it may be.
