Aparthotel Set To Open In Dublin Despite Public Backlash

An aparthotel will be officially taking up space in the heart of Dublin, Liberties, regardless of locals’ protests. An Coimisiún Pleanála, an independent body, accepted the proposal for a new aparthotel at 144 Thomas Street following a rejected appeal.

According to Dublin Live, locals in Dublin 8 have been protesting against the ‘touristification’ of the historic Dublin street since May, and are fighting for the desperate need for public and community housing.

Branch of Anti Imperialist Actions (AIA) Ireland, “strongly condemned” the development with Coiste Robert Emmet stating, “This is yet another example of how little the state cares about the working class in this country.”  Socialist Republican Mass Organisation extended solidarity to the residents of Bridgefoot Street “who have been out on the streets calling for the planning permission to be refused.”

Sinn Féin Cllr. Ciarán Ó Meachair shows disappointment on social media, saying, “The touristification of The Liberties continues. Once again Planners totally unaccountable to the public make decisions that hurt the local community.”

Back in May, Sinn Féin TD Máire Devine and Welthomas Property Limited submitted an appeal highlighting the concerns of locals. Though, the appeal was rejected by the Dublin City Council on the grounds of no “overconcentration of visitor accommodation in the area.”

The six-storey building is planned to accommodate a café on the ground level, a bar and events space on the fifth floor, with no permission for amplified music or entertainment noise emissions.
