After the scandal of the Dáil vote, where Sinn Féin, Social Democrats, Labour, Independent Ireland and Independents all failed to show up for a vote that they could have won, the Defence Bill that will remove the Triple Lock passed with the clear collusion of the above mentioned. Matt Carthy and Richard Ò Donoghue took to social media to explain themselves in what amounted to be the most egregious pair of excuses in Irish political history, claiming time keeping and doctors appointments respectively, arguably outshining Bertie’s “no bank account” claim during the Mahon Tribunal. As for Holly Cairns, her absence was a declaration of intent towards a coalition with FF. None of these charlatans would ever be seen to be carried into the Dàil on a stretcher like Dick Spring famously was in the early 80’s, that’s for sure. Crucially, none of this was challenged by any entity in the Dáil because they were all complicit.

What should have happened in the immediate aftermath of that vote, after seeing there were enough people in the Dáil to support it, is that Article 27 of our Constitution should have been threatened. One third of our Dáil can register their wish to petition the President, an official mechanism within Article 27 that would force the Seanad to do the same, and if 50% of the Seanad agreed, then President Connolly would be empowered to refer the bill to the people by way of referendum. The rebellious spirit needed for this seems to be absent however as Sinn Fein released a social media post calling for a referendum on the issue even though it is within their power to trigger Article 27\. One wonders if they even know, but of course they do. The general public once again are being subjected to political impotency by a “Working Opposition”. With Article 27 remaining holstered and under the lock and key of the left-reformist opposition, there remains only one option. The resignation of the President herself.

The demarcation line for positive engagement between socialist republicans and the reformist left has to be neutrality in general. The social democrats must be haunted by their posturing on this in particular. Measures such as President Connolly resigning in protest should be, without question, called for in the upcoming situation where Irish troops are deployed in the Lebanese civil war to fight for Israel. According to Dr. Tom Clonan, this is what is expected to happen if the triple lock is abolished.

Without an elected President, and without a bill passing that crucial Seanad vote, it cannot be signed, promulgated and entered into law, save by the Presidents Council, which I will explain in a moment. President Connolly has it within her power to tactically resign the presidency at an opportune moment to kill the bill, and possibly trigger the total collapse of this government with it. Such a resignation and the resulting triggering of a Presidential election would create havoc for the Bill in regards to its progression through the various stages. It would also be a massive political statement that would condemn the bill to Oireachtas purgatory while at the same time preserving her deeply held convictions regarding the triple lock. This is also now the only measure that would see her remain true to the left wing alliance whose collective efforts put her into office. It would be political suicide to try progress a bill that caused a presidential resignation, a resignation that the entire country would support and we know this as new polling data is out. FFG have already fallen to their lowest ever ratings in the polls over this bill with a combined 30%, at 15% a piece. Virgin Media's The Tonight Show on the 21st October also showed that 86% of respondents voted that they want Ireland's "Triple Lock" mechanism retained. She has the mandate to do this but what would it trigger?

When a President resigns, the Presidential Commission takes over the function of the President until a new one is elected. It consists of the Chief Justice of Ireland, the Ceann Comhairle (Speaker) of Dáil Éireann, and the Cathaoirleach (Speaker) of Seanad Éireann, Currently consisting of:

Chief Justice of Ireland: Mr. Justice Donal O'Donnell (serving since October 2021). An a-political post however he was appointed by Michael D. Higgins which alludes to his persuasion. Would likely refuse to sign the bill into law.

Chair of the Dáil (Ceann Comhairle): Verona Murphy TD, an independent TD who became the first woman to ever hold the position following her election in December 2024\. Sold her soul to FFG for the position but has no backbone. Hard to tell what she would do.

Chair of the Seanad (Cathaoirleach): Senator Mark Daly of Fianna Fáil, who was elected to lead the 27th Seanad in February 2025\. A hard working Senator but a vital cog in the machinery of FFG. Would likely sign the bill.

If President Connolly resigns, the legislative purgatory that I described above would undoubtedly set in. I have no doubt about it that the bill would become terminal at that moment and be quarantined in order to save the civil war parties' respective franchises. In the event however that a tactical resignation did occur, and these three people were faced with signing that bill, it would ultimately force the entire responsibility for the passing of the bill back into the lap of FFG, snookering them regardless. The resignation of a President triggers a 60 day window, by the end of which, an election must occur. An election that President Connolly can nominate herself for and would win by a country mile. The beauty of this mechanism is that she can do it twice. We can turn President Connolly’s resignation into a Filibuster. Even if the bloodlust overcame the President’s Council and the bill was still to be signed, this would force the bill into a legislative panic to reach its final stage over a period of which the Oireachtas would barely sit one quarter of those 60 days. It would almost be impossible for them to do it. A tactical resignation would be a silver bullet for the Military Industrial Complex in Ireland and a victory for us all. She would just have to time it well.

The entire Left alliance that backed Connolly’s Presidency is in trouble here. Because they failed to turn up for the vote and because they refuse to indicate a willingness to trigger Article 27 they have backed their President into a corner where she will be forced to either sign the Bill or resign. There is no other way out of this. If Connolly signs the Bill it was the Left who signed away our neutrality. If she resigns, it was the Left who saved the day with a brave sacrifice that will define the political destiny and identity of this nation for decades to come.
