Heartstone Veganic Sanctuary has issued an urgent appeal for funding, stating that its finances are in a “critical situation”. The lives of 23 cows are at stake. Nía, who is a lifelong vegan and animal rights activist, runs the sanctuary, but lacks the necessary funding to provide the infrastructure of shelter, handling, facilities and fencing. As a result, the authorities might seize the cows, and a fundraiser has been set up, which has received considerable support.

“Devastatingly, there is still no guarantee the gang will be safe. But, we are a huge step closer, and since I haven't been doing anything since April 2024 than desperately trying to meet the authorities' (read: animal agriculture's) requirements again after Heartstone's original home farm in Sligo sank in order to save the cows, that's what I will keep doing as long as there are either cows, or I am able to. And, of course, I need your help with that,” she wrote on her donation’s page, which can be accessed [here](https://donorbox.org/keep-heartstone-sanctuary-alive?utm%5Fsource=ig&utm%5Fmedium=social&utm%5Fcontent=link%5Fin%5Fbio&fbclid=PAcGRvZgJleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZA85MzY2MTk3NDMzOTI0NTkAAaehB4-xksNlcjjImM73E5GRSrwzxX0GkOAwmV-cPI5cswjxK7NogK04VEpbyw%5Faem%5FEgBeRMwqULXBMzol0WvyhA).

Heartstone Veganic Sanctuary [exists](https://www.heartstone.earth/?ref=aontachtmedia.ie) to “provide a safe and loving home for rescued animals, while also working towards a sustainable, ethical, and vegan future”. They “go beyond basic care to create an environment where animals can truly thrive and live in a way that feels natural and fulfilling to them”. Heartstone also advocates for rewilding, which they believe is “one of the most powerful ways to address the climate crisis”.

Some socialist revolutionaries are passionate about defending animal rights, and there is a history of organising for this issue in Ireland. For instance, in March 2026, the [Trinity branch of PBP](https://universitytimes.ie/2026/03/trinity-people-before-profit-implement-permanent-vegan-policy-environment-sustainability-societies-college/?ref=aontachtmedia.ie) alongside the university’s Vegan Society advocated for a meat-free campus, arguing that switching to vegan catering ends the exploitation of animals as a cruelty-free alternative. It has also featured prominently in the Monitor, a [new socialist publication](https://themonitor.ie/?ref=aontachtmedia.ie) at Trinity College Dublin. There are also other groups active in Ireland which are more apolitical, such as the Irish Anti-Vivisection Society (IAVS) and the National Animal Rights’ Association (NAMA).

Gary Francione’s book, “Animals As Persons” is recommended to all Aontacht readers who would like to learn more about animal rights, as well as the history of the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), which is heavily influenced by anarchist tendencies.
